about me
food has always been a big part of my life. my mother had me in the kitchen at 3 years old, smelling spices and watching her stir her brews. I can remember coming home to stewing garden tomatoes and herbs, knowing full damn well we were gonna be feasting on mom's homemade spaghetti for dinner that night. she would often feed all of our friends and was emphatic that there was always room at our table. our kitchen was a warm, loving and joyful space that saw many laughs, tears and delicious morsels. food was at the center of it all.
when I eventually made my way to New Orleans for college, I discovered what true passion for food can look like. on one of the first days of class, I found myself in a busy elevator that was pin-drop quiet so naturally I verbally acknowledged the awkward silence. the one person that laughed would later become my best friend. we went out to grab a bite for our first hang. she literally MOANED into her sandwich. loudly. and after recovering from my shock, I realized I had been eating wrong my entire life. THIS was how food should be eaten— with passion, joy and celebration. even if it's just a sandwich.
all of my favorite memories involve food in some form. almost all of those memories include amazing people. my mother became obsessed with the word 'sonder' after my brother showed it to her one night while we were eating dinner. she said "that's it. that's how I feel about people and what I hope you two can embrace as you get older." I've tried to live by this word, embracing it not just as a noun but as a verb— an action. I've found that my favorite way to show folks that I see them and I appreciate them is through my cooking. where there is empathy, there is love. where there is passion, there is joy. and most importantly, where there is connection, there is Sonder. may we all have room at each others' kitchen tables.

simple thoughts on bartering
everything on this planet has value. when we allow ourselves to consider how valuable something is to us personally and not just default to their pre-determined, arbitrary monetary value, we foster more freedom and flexibility in how we relate to the world around us. in a community that may be dealing with contaminated water, a water filter is exponentially more valuable than the price you might see at a big brand store. clean, homegrown veggies are extremely valuable if there's a recall on grocery store produce.
we are more than just consumers. we come from traders, sharers and caretakers. bartering is an ancient art that allows us the opportunity to consider what we truly need to Live.
to truly Live—deeply, passionately, joyfully—we must first identify our base needs, our easy joys, and most importantly, our skills. understanding these things about ourselves creates space to rely on community and subsequently be relied upon by our community.
to begin sinking into this mindset ask yourself this: what do I need and what can I offer in return? I think you'll be surprised at the vast amount you have to offer. if bartering sounds like fun to you, let's make something happen.
